Laura Boselli

She resumed painting in 1984 and continued to attend various art courses and life-drawing classes. In 1989 she undertook classes with established artist Margery Hummel Bennett until 1993. In 1992, acted as an Italian tour guide at the National Gallery of Victoria for the Rubens and the Italian Renaissance exhibition. In 1993 she held her first solo exhibition. In 1994 and 1996 she conducted art workshops at The Grove Wholistic Centre and in 1996 at Strathcona Girls Grammar School. Since 1996 has been commissioned to execute various paintings, including a wall hanging for Cabrini Hospital.

Laura paints in acrylic using intense colours to portray mood and emotion. Currently experimenting with gold leaf, various materials and mixed media to create a richer texture to her work.

Her preferred subjects are figures. The figures seek to strike an empathetic chord. These figures may be distorted, squashed into the boundaries of the canvas or contrastingly, flowing off the sides of the painting. This is done to incorporate the image within the environment or at times to intensify the emotional impact of the subject.

Still life is treated with the same approach as the figures. Flowers may take on a human form; tulips and sunflowers demonstrate a corresponding contrast to the different stages in life. The still life subjects are alive with colour, busy with objects and at times even painted on a tilt to give them personality and character.

Experience. Reflection. Interpretation. Whether positive or negative, the subjects depicted by the artist have been created as a result of an emotional response. The paintings do not necessarily have a message nor tell a story, they are to be enjoyed.
